ST.GEORGE'S, GRENADA, JUNE 27, 2014 -GIS: The 16 month old Keith Mitchell administration again followed through on its commitment to Grenada’s youth with the third roll out of a successful youth internship initiative on Friday.A third batch of Imani trainees, pumped up and charged for the world of training and career, participated in a commencement ceremony at the Trade Centre in St. George’s.
“I am very proud of each and every one of you right now,” declared Senator Sheldon Scott, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Youth Sports and Religious Affairs.
“I want you all to have me brimming with joy when two years from now you can say that you have made use of this opportunity. You need to move to permanent employment”.
The 1000 trainees participating in the ceremony bring the total number on the programme to 3000. Two batches of 1000 trainees are already participating in the programme.
The third roll out comes as the Mitchell government moves to further reduce unemployment in the country after slashing it by 7 percent in less than a year of being elected.
“We were constrained because of the fundamental problems of the country,” Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell told the trainees.
“But we never wavered in our commitment to see this day because we recognize that we have a fundamental responsibility to you and to our country”.
During the two year stint trainees will receive a monthly stipend and are required to participate in pre training and post training. A complaints desk has been setup for feedback from trainees and members of the public.
“We have rules regarding attendance and disciplinary behavior. Deactivation is important to us because it gives us the opportunity to really weed the garden,” explained Kevin Andall, Coordinator of Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs.
“When you violate the disciplinary procedures of the programme for example, if you are inactive in the programme for 14 days or more we will stop the stipend”.
