Grenada Expresses Sorrow over Disaster in Neighboring Islands

ST GEORGE'S, GRENADA, Friday, December 27, 2013 – GIS: The Grenada government has expressed its "deepest sense of regret at the loss of lives and properties and the displacement of people as a result of the heavy rains over the Christmas period in our sister Windward Islands."

In an official statement, the government of Grenada expressed solidarity with the governments and peoples of Dominica, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines "at this trying and difficult time."

While the heavy rains also lashed Grenada from Christmas Eve going into Christmas Day, the brunt of its effect was felt in St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

"Grenada stands ready to mobilize its people and limited resources to help our sisters and brothers," the statement said.

Disaster Management officials in St George's are speaking to their counterparts in the other three islands about their immediate needs and concrete ways in which the assistance can be organized.

"The heavy rains and the resulting disaster once again reminds us about the vulnerability of our various islands, and need for continued planning and preparation at mitigation," the official statement of regret declared.

Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell, has been briefed on the developments, and has been in touch with his counterparts.
