Government mobilizing buyers with Grenada’s best interest for Grenlec

ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA, Monday, September 30, 2013 - GIS: Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell has assured the nation that buyers with the country’s best interest are being mobilized for the take-over of the Grenada Electricity Company (GRENLEC).

“We are going to pull out all stops to make sure that the new owners of GRENLEC will be people who are more sympathetic to the interest of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique,” Prime Minister Mitchell declared.

Prime Minister Mitchell was speaking days after Government confirmed that it has accepted the invitation to purchase majority share holdings in GRENLEC.

The Grenadian leader called for national support to government’s bid to put grenlec in the hands of new owners.

“Whatever decision we have to take, we expect you to support us; because I am not going out there on a limb and hear people say the prime minister should not do that; because they might try to fight us and the only how they can fight us is if the people of Grenada support them,”Dr.Mitchell said.

“We are going to do what we have to do to make sure that GRENLEC is in the hands of people, who can reduce the price of electricity so all in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique can benefit”.

Prime Minister Mitchell has stressed that government is not reclaiming majority shares in the company; but facilitating the buyout of GRENLEC.

He told a constituency forum that buyers are keen on the offer.

“Right now there are about four buyers interested in helping us get back the control of this company” he said.
