ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, May 4, 2017 – GIS: Not a single accident has occurred at the massive Silver Sands site since the start of construction two years ago.

This disclosure was made on Friday as Grenada joined the rest of the world in observing World Day for Safety and Health at Work.

Architect Nigel Renwick spoke to a delegation from the Ministry of Labour who dropped in to assess health and safety on the work place.

“We have been on site now over two years and we have not had a single incident on site. Not a single incident in that time. Which, considering how tight the site is, and the amount of heavy equipment moving around, I think is a testimony to our site engineers and the control that they keep on the contractors here. We do try to keep our contractors aware of health and safety,” Mr. Renwick said.

More than four hundred workers are employed at Silver Sand’s construction site, a figure which would rise to 500 as construction hits a high point.

The visiting delegation included Labour Commissioner Cyrus Griffith and was led by the Labour Minister Oliver Joseph.

“As we observe Occupational Safety and Health Day, in a project like this, it is important that we observe the health and safety of workers. That’s a critical to the project,” Minister Joseph said. “You want to ensure that you do not have serious injuries on the work site. And I was pleased to see the number of workers that are wearing their protective gear – almost one hundred per cent - and that’s good”.
