NCC- MEDIA RELEASE INDEPENDENCE WALK

ST. GEORGE’S GRENADA January 25, 2016 NCC: Walkers came out in sneakers and hit the pavement in a synchronized walk across the island last Sunday. The National Celebrations Committee is pleased with the turnout to the Nationwide Inaugural Independence walk held across the various parishes. The organizing committee spearheaded by Raphael Crooney said that the turnout was very encouraging and it shows that Grenadians are becoming more and more conscious of their health.

The nation was called upon to participate in a 10 k walk on Sunday in the spirit of togetherness as Grenada celebrates its 42nd anniversary of Independence. Several MPs and government officials joined the walk in their various parishes including Sen. Brenda Hood of whose ministry the NCC falls under.

Hundreds of Grenadians were seen across the island participating in the event that provided buses for the challenged, water and other supplies. The walks were enhanced with dj music rendering a measure of patriotic songs as the proud Grenadians walked the various routes across the island.

Keeping fit is considered an important way of life and Grenadians are often called upon to have some form of exercise added to their daily routine. Prime Minister Keith Mitchell in addressing a packed crowd at the opening of the National Athletic and football Stadium alluded to the importance of exercising on a daily basis and made reference to his mother who is in her nineties doing so on a daily basis.

The NCC takes this opportunity to extend its appreciation to all the supporters of the walks especially those who would have contributed by way of their time and material in making the walks possible.

Ms. Ann Marie Marecheau, Chairman of NCC invites the nation to continue to participate in all the activities planned for the celebrations. The three next major events for independence will take place on this coming Saturday and Sunday. The National Motorcade and Calypso competition will take place on Saturday and the Independence Church Service on Sunday at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Grand Anse.

Grenada’s 42nd Anniversary Celebrations will culminate with the Military Parade, National Rally Expo and Cultural Extravaganza on Independence Day, February 7, at the National Stadium commencing at 10 pm.
