ST. GEORGE’S GRENADA January 29, 2016:- This weekend promises to be a very hectic one according to the organizers of the 42nd Anniversary of Independence.
Tomorrow Saturday sees the staging of two major independence events taking place in the Nation. The return of the national motorcade which is expected to start at 9am tomorrow from the Burns Point Roundabout will travel across the island stopping in all the major towns and villages. According to the organizing committee, the event is geared at stimulating a sense of patriotism and pride of country as Grenada’s are called out to rally around the island in the spirit of Independence. The motorcade is an excellent opportunity for families to come out and enjoy a day of true ‘Grenadianism’, according to organizers of the event.
The motorcade will proceed from the Burns Point Roundabout in St. George’s heading into the town of St. George’s, through River Road, up Marrast Hill, down Lowther’s Lane, through Kirani James Boulevard into Grand Anse. It will then proceed along the Eastern corridor into St. David stopping at Central St. David and La Tante Junction. The next major stop will be in the town of Grenville and then unto the Pearl’s airstrip. The motorcade will then proceed down the western corridor with stops in Sauteurs, Victoria and Gouyave before heading back into St. George’s.
Persons are asked to walk with their refreshment It is expected that several oildown pots will make up the cuisine for the day as persons are already gearing up to indulge in the national dish. The organizers are optimistic that this will be a major event and are extending an invitation to clubs and other social groups to participate. The usual independence décor will be visible as the vehicles move across the nation and the music played by the dj will be strictly patriotic and local.
Following the motorcade the action continues at the Grenville Bus Terminus with the staging of the Independence Calypso Monarch Competition where thirteen artistes will come up against the 2015 Monarch Sean Niles, Sour Serpent. The competition will start at 8 pm and there is a small fee of $5.00 to enter.
The weekend will end with the National Church Service at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Grand Anse organized by the Grenada Conference of Churches. The service will commence at 3pm and all are invited.
The weekend activities will be followed by major events during the following week including the National Colours Day and the Cultural Extravaganza in Gouyave both happening next Friday and the National Military Parade, Rally, Made in Grenada Expo and Cultural Extravaganza on Sunday 7, Independence Day, starting at 10 am at the National Stadium.
