ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA , February 14, 2017 – GIS: The Consulate General in Miami joined Grenadians in Florida for a week of activities to commemorate Grenada's 43rd Anniversary of Independence.
The events started on Saturday, February 4th in Orlando with "A Taste of Grenada" hosted by the Grenadian-American Education and Cultural Organization (GAECO), let by John Munro. There were over 200 nationals and friends of Grenada in attendance to celebrate and raise funds for the Grenada Patients Kidney Foundation.
Independence Day, February 7th, was proclaimed "Grenada Day" in Miami by Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, and Special Assistant to the Mayor, Diana Rodriguez, presented the proclamation to Consul General Warren E. Newfield at the National Day Reception hosted by the Consulate General.
In attendance were city officials, members of the Consular Corp, local businesses, universities and nationals. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the remarks by Guest of honor, Senator the Honourable Peter David, who brought greetings on behalf of the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to the over 100 guests. Senator David spoke to the development taking place on the island and the achievements and milestones that are being recognized.
Also on hand to add a destination marketing component to the evening was Mrs. Christine Noel-Horsford, Director of Sales & Marketing of the Grenada Tourism Authority, USA. Both presentations were well received, and generated much interest for nationals and guests alike. The event was very conducive for networking amongst the guests. Caribbean Airlines Account Executive, Kaye Chong, made a presentation on the airline's partnership with Grenada, and donated an airline ticket as a door prize for the event.
On Sunday, February 12th, the Grenada Cultural Association of South Florida, led by Vice President Gerald James, hosted the annual Thanksgiving Independence church service at the Holy Family Episcopal Church in Miami Gardens. The service was streamed live on the internet and broadcast live on Grenada's own RealFM 91.9 and 91.5. For the first time, Grenadians in the Diaspora received the Prime Minister's Independence message via video. The community in south Florida was treated to a lavish "Taste of Grenada" lunch following the service, accompanied by live steel band music.
The Consul General and staff reaffirm their fullest commitment to partnering with the various community organizations in celebrating and promoting Grenada, and to be of service to our nationals in the Florida community.
