Governor General’s sister invested with Order of Distinction in Jamaica

ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2014 - GIS:  Dr. Janet La Grenade, the sister of Grenada’s Governor General, Dame Cecile La Grenade, was invested with the Order of Distinction, Commander Class, at the National Heroes’ Day ceremony held in Kingston, Jamaica on Monday, October 20, 2014, for her seminal contribution to community mental health in Jamaica.

Dr. La Grenade, a Grenadian by birth, graduated from the University of the West Indies with a medical degree in 1969 and went on to obtain a post-graduate degree in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Psychiatry in the United Kingdom in 1975.

Her entire professional life was spent in Jamaica and she has also worked as a consultant for many Caribbean islands, including Grenada. Her major contribution to Jamaican mental health was in the area of Community Psychiatry, including the development of a training programme for Community Nurses, and participation in the establishment of an administrative structure suitable for the delivery of these services.

Dr.  La Grenade retired as a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, University of the West Indies, in 2010.

The elder Dr. La Grenade’s award comes on the heels of that of her sister’s, Grenada’s Dame Cecile La Grenade, who earlier this year was Knighted by Queen Elizabeth 11, and on October 18th was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Sciences degree from the University of the West Indies, Cavehill.
