ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, February 27, 2017 - GIS: Prime Minister Dr.Keith Mitchell has given employees at the Mt.Gay Hospital in St.George’s the assurance that a sewage problem affecting them is being resolved.

Prime Minister Mitchell delivered a firm commitment to the workers while leading a government delegation on a visit to the hospital on Monday.

The Grenadian leader told the workers he had no difficulty with their decision to stage protest action after persistently complaining about the stench from the sewage system of a nearby housing project.

Prime Minister Mitchell conceded that the problem should have been resolved earlier and that workers ought not to have gone the route of demonstrating before they are heard.

"I am deeply concerned and disappointed that the system took so long to resolve this,” Prime Minister Mitchell said.

“I have given instructions and expect that this should be followed."

Prime Minister Mitchell has asked the workers to “take him on personally” if the matter is not solved.'

The National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) has been asked to take over the management of sewage systems in all government housing developments including Mt. Rush and Soubise.

Christopher Husbands, the Manager of NAWASA has disclosed that all projects are being reviewed to ensure that the systems are upgraded.

“We have started with Mt. Gay and Soubise but reviewing all the other projects to ensure that the systems are upgraded,” said Husbands.

“A joint team has done a review. They are finalizing plans to replace clogged system. The current one is clogged”.

Prime Minister Mitchell, who visited Mt. Gay Hospital in his capacity as acting health minister, was also accompanied by the Chief Medical Officer, Mr. George Mitchell and two permanent secretaries in the Ministry of Health, Mr. Aaron Francois and Ms. Pauline Peters.
