Grenada’s Health Minister meets Dominica PM as aid mobilization picks up steam

ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA, August 31, 2015 - GIS:  Dominica's Prime Minister, Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit met with Grenada's Minister of Health, Honourable Nickolas Steele, earlier today, at the Prime Minister's office.

Minister Steele has headed a First Response team to Dominica, arriving there on Sunday, August 30th.

He is on the ground accompanied by Deputy Police Commissioner, Mr. Franklyn Redhead, a Senior Engineer of the National Coast Guard, and a Pathologist from the Ministry of Health.

The team also carried with them initial supplies such as water and non-perishable food items.

However Grenada is in the process of mobilizing more assistance for residents of its fellow Windward Island territory.

Prime Minister Mitchell has already sent requests to our friends who are part of the Economic Citizenship Programme to donate whatever they can. In his capacity as Chairman of the OECS, he has called on his colleague Heads with those resources to do the same.

He has committed Grenada to providing aid in the amount of USD100, 000 and again, as OECS Chairman, he has asked his colleague Heads to make a similar commitment.

The Prime Minister also announced that the Ministry of Culture will plan a major national fundraising activity, with all proceeds going to Dominica.

Islandwide donations continue with boxes placed at major retail outlets, including MNIB, all Andall and Associates stores, Foodland, FoodFair, and Real Value supermarkets.

Cash donations can be made to the Dominica Relief Fund at the Grenada Cooperative bank, at account number 121004900.

At least two disaster relief teams in Grenada are on standby, ready to be deployed to Dominica, as needed.
