GRENADA AND MARTINIQUE TO COLLABORATE ON CULTURAL AND LANGUAGE EXCHANGES

ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA, July 13, 2015 - GIS:  Grenada’s Minister of Culture and Heritage, Honourable Brenda Hood, met with the President of the Regional Council of Martinique, Serge Letchimy, while on a cultural visit to that country.

The two high level officials discussed joint initiatives for the bolstering of the cultural industries of both Islands.

President Letchimy presented a proposal which aims to facilitate student exchanges between the Islands—an initiative already discussed within the framework of the OECS, the regional body of which Martinique is now a Member.

The project proposal involves the creation of Language Exchange Programmes for students and professionals in different sectors of Martinique and Grenada.  Those would serve as precursors to larger programmes with the other OECS Member States.

Minister Hood welcomed the suggestion, with the view that this was one of the many possible and important areas for engagement with Martinique, which is now a valuable member of our Regional Economic Union.

The Culture Minister suggested that further areas of cooperation could include work on the cost of inter-island travel; as well as agriculture, since Martinique is home to a number of specialties in that sector.

The meeting between Minister Hood and President Letchimy was held on July 6th, on the margins of the Cultural Festival of Fort-de-France in Martinique.

Grenada was represented at the Martinique Festival by the Minister and a traditional delegation that included the Tivoli Drummers.
