PEST MANAGEMENT UNIT EDUCATES FARMERS IN CARRIACOU AND PETITE MARTINIQUE

Beausejour, Carriacou, February 11, 2014- The Agricultural Division within the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique has embarked on an awareness campaign in relation to pests and diseases affecting crops on the island.

Through the hosting of a series of plant clinics across the twin isle parish by the Pest Management Unit. The latest clinic was held in the boat building community of Windward.

Pest Control Officer Patrick Mathurine said that with diseases such as the black sigatoka affecting banana plants and scale insects; the clinic is a means of educating farmers on the corrective measures they can take to save their plants.

Quarantine Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture Peter Joseph is providing support at the plant clinics. He noted that the smuggling of fruits and vegetables from neighboring islands continues to be of major concern to the Ministry. Therefore, he asked for persons who engage in the trade to desist; as there are provisions within the law for action to be taken.

The next plant clinic is scheduled for the month of March in the village of Mt. Royal.
