NNP Congratulates Government

The New National Party (NNP) takes this opportunity to congratulate the Government of Grenada on initiatives taken to ensure that the country’s democratic institutions are protected and that citizens are given every opportunity to participate in the process.

Given the overwhelming mandate the party received in the February  19, 2013 general elections - winning all 15 available seats, meant that there will be no opposition voices in the lower house of parliament.

In this regard, and being cognizant of the fact that the development of Grenada requires the contribution of all citizens, the Keith Mitchell-led administration in its own deliberate wisdom, developed the Committee of Social Partners., which comprises the Grenada Trades Union Council, faith-based organizations, civil society organizations and the Grenada Private Sector Organisation and Government.

The Social Partners’ Committee has been meeting regularly, with several sessions held in the Cabinet room and in demonstrating the importance of the Committee to the country’s development, the Prime Minister, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, has taken the lead to chair the meetings.

NNP is aware of the many benefits that have been derived as it relates to the positive function of the Committee of Social Partners over the past ten months.

NNP further applauds the initiative taken by the Social Partners’ Committee in engaging opposition political parties, as its press release of January 29. 2014 outlined.

We see this as a welcome initiative and reassuring that the Social Partners see input of the opposition political parties as a vital part of the development process. This NNP wishes to single out for commendation.

What is disturbing, though, is that while both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the National United Front (NUF) were invited to a consultation of the CSP to get their input in the development of a social compact, NDC chose to be absent.   As it’s been outlined, the aim of the social compact is to establish a road map for the further development of Grenada and one would have thought that as a party which previously administered the country’s affairs, NDC would have seen it appropriate to be represented at such an important meeting.

It is very encouraging to know, however, that both parties accepted the invitation of the partners to meet for a consultation and while that is so, NNP finds it inexcusable for NDC not to be represented at the meeting.

Only the NUF showed up for the meeting.  NNP congratulates the NUF for making their voice heard in the development of the social compact and their genuine contribution towards the political stability and development of the country.

Again, NNP understands the wisdom in the decision by the social partner’s committee to invite the opposition parties to consultation, on the historical basis of what it considers to be a very negative and anti- productive trend in which new governments in taking office would tend to reverse or delay almost all of the initiatives taken by a previous administration.

Like the Social partners, NNP doesn’t see such administrative practice or policy as being in the best interest of the people.

This is the reason that Prime Minister, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, has been saying since on the campaign trail that the future development of Grenada would surely rest on Uniting our People.

As a political organization, firmly believing in that process, we see the contribution by the social partners as a paramount feature to prosperity.

We want to categorically place on record that we fully support the position taken by the Committee of Social Partners that all should be incorporated in the process of Nation building.
