New anti corruption boss brands Grenada a trailer blazer state

ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, May 19, 2017 – GIS: The new chairman of the Commonwealth Caribbean Association of Integrity Commissions and Anti-Corruption Bodies has paid glowing tribute to the Keith Mitchell administration on its role in promoting good governance and fighting corruption.

Eugene Otvonye QC, who replaced Grenada as the new chair, is wrapping up a visit to the island which included meetings with top government officials including Prime Minister

Dr. Keith Mitchell.

Since 2015, Grenada has held the secretariat and the chairmanship of the organization and has funded its operations for three years before membership subscription kicked in, in April.

Otvonye QC stated “I probably want to use this opportunity to let the world know that if you are not interested, if you are not committed to fighting corruption you will not allow the resources of your people to be deployed in this manner, there’s no reason why other governments should not come forward".

He went on saying that “Grenada took it upon its self, and until for the last two (2) years and I think that’s something that we are heavily indebted to as a region to the Grenada government and its people, and I’ve just said to the Prime Minister, I met him just a couple of minutes ago, and I don’t see any how, any other practical evidence of commitment to good governance and fighting corruption.”

Otvonye has described Grenada as a trail blazer for anti-corruption and good governance practices.

He was also high in praise for the former and current chairpersons of the Grenada Integrity Commission, retired justice Monica Joseph and lady Anande Trotman Joseph.

“I can’t put it in any other way, they’ve led the way, the chairmanship that I have just entered into, the Prime Minister said to me you have just walked into a big shoe and this is a big responsibility and I know that, because the two chairmen of the association in the power of Justice Dame Monica Joseph retired and lady Anande Trotman Joseph, they have offered stellar leadership without their pioneering leadership we probably would have crumbled.”

The Keith Mitchell administration has been promoting a new era of open government with the installation of an integrity commission, an office of the ombudsman and laws promoting good governance.
